Work

Building conditions
for people to make.

My professional work connects programme design, studio-based learning, assessment, creative practice and collaboration with organisations.

01 / Education and leadership

Programmes as working environments

I am Associate Professor and Programme Director for postgraduate Digital Innovation at the University of Bristol.

The approved programme structure brings together three awards: MA Digital Media Innovation, MA User Experience Design and Innovation, and MA Digital Business Innovation. It creates a shared interdisciplinary environment while giving each pathway a distinct field of practice.

Previously, as Centre Education Director, I led education strategy, programme development and interdisciplinary curriculum work. My concern is not simply what a programme contains, but the conditions it creates for students and colleagues to work well. The result is a more coherent environment that teaching teams can deliver and students can navigate with greater confidence.

02 / Educational innovation

Learning through practice and dialogue

My teaching and development work centres on studio pedagogy: learning through making, testing, critique, reflection and iteration.

Learning Conversations

A dialogic approach to assessment and feedback that asks students to explain how they think: the judgement, evidence and decisions behind the work, rather than merely describing what they did. It creates more efficient, dependable and human assessment, with clearer evidence of individual understanding across large and complex cohorts.

Evidence Decks

A structured project record that makes process, decisions, contribution and learning visible across complex collaborative work. It gives students, teaching teams and external partners a reliable shared record, reducing ambiguity while improving reflection, feedback and accountability.

Team and intercultural learning

Designing environments in which interdisciplinary and international teams can make meaningful work together under uncertain conditions. These structures help diverse teams negotiate difference, make decisions and produce useful work rather than simply divide tasks.

03 / Collaboration

Work connected to the world beyond the university

I develop live briefs, exchanges and project relationships with public, cultural and industry partners. Recent programme collaborations have included government, creative production, consultancy, public art and digital organisations.

The purpose is not to simulate professional work. It is to create bounded situations in which students, academics and partners can think together and produce useful evidence. Partners gain fresh perspectives, prototypes and evidence, while students encounter real constraints, stakeholders and consequences.

Organisations I have worked with

These relationships span commissioned creative work, professional practice, educational collaboration and live postgraduate Digital Innovation projects.
